Staggeringly, the carbon footprint of surgical care in the UK based on data from 2019 is around 5.7 million tonnes of CO2e. To offset this you would need to plant a forest more than triple the size of London.

This is why we welcome a landmark report that sets the groundwork for reducing the carbon footprint of surgical care. The Green Surgery report has involved significant input and collaboration with individuals and organisations working across the surgical care pathway for a truly clinical perspective on where change is possible. The result is the world's first detailed account of how to reduce the environmental impact of surgical care while maintaining high quality patient care.

The report is available in our resources section under research and reports, and you can also watch a short video
