Invest in our planet this Earth Day

This year Earth Day asks us all to play our part in tackling climate change ensuring global commitments translate into global action.

Earth day slogan - Invest in our planet

What is the purpose of the day?

Earth Day celebrates its 52nd birthday on 22nd April. Every year it asks us all to come together to raise awareness of climate change; because collectively we can really create the change needed to tackle this problem.

In raising awareness on a global scale, though Earth Day we can help protect the health of our planet and reduce the risks of our changing climate.

'Everyone accounted for, and everyone accountable'

As individuals within our community we have the potential to make a significant impact if we are united in our cause.

Together we can hold businesses, governments, and our community accountable for our environmental impact and encourage efforts to reduce it.

Why should we act now?

This month the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), led by experts in climate science, released the sixth assessment report on the state of our global climate.

While it is hopeful that we can still act to mitigate the worst of climate change, it came with a stark warning. Globally we must halve our emissions by 2030 to ensure we meet the 1.5 degrees warming limit set out in the 2016 Paris Agreement.

Any increase above 1.5 degrees will make it much harder to mitigate against the impacts of climate change.

How can we act?

There is still time to solve the climate crisis and it is within our reach if we are united and work together. Time is precious but there is much we can already do as part of our everyday lives.

Within the NHS we are already taking action to reduce our carbon emissions, and all Trusts now have a Green Plan, with a commitment to achieve Net Zero Carbon by 2040.

This is a world first in healthcare and we are determined to meet this commitment through our Care Without Carbon programme.

On a more individual level you can also make a pledge through our Dare to Care programme to try doing something differently to reduce your impact on the environment. Simply click here to make your pledge today.

Together we really can ensure we share a healthy planet that supports all our health.
