National compliment day brings smiles and wellbeing to all
Say something nice today
If your mother ever told you not to say anything if you couldn’t say something nice, she was onto something.
When we are kind to others, it makes us feel good. A single compliment can go a long way. And it works when we are kind to ourselves too – when was the last time you said to yourself, ‘that was a good job I did with that’? Try it and see how it feels – maybe it feels a tad weird, but I bet you have a little smile too.
National compliment day is the perfect excuse to practice your niceness skills! It started 10 years ago in the US, and has grown in popularity since then. The aim is simple, to boost the number of compliments being shared around the world. It could be your partner, child, mum, neighbour, colleague or patient. Anyone and everyone loves a compliment. They are validating, encouraging and affirming. The feel-good factor works both ways too. The recipient feels good and the giver gets a warm glow too. Try it and see!
What to compliment?
Compliments can be about anything at all, from what someone is wearing, to the amazing way they handle a problem. It could be as simple as they make a cracking cup of coffee.
The only rule is you have to mean it when you say it. A fake compliment is a sad and empty thing.
So get out there on 24th Jan and give away some free joy by bestowing compliments all around.
One last thing, receiving a compliment with good grace is crucial! If someone says you look good in that jumper, smile and say thanks, don’t say ‘Really? This is so old’ or something equally dismissive of their words. Take it and enjoy it!
This is a great article if you’d like to know more about the value of compliments.
