Susie Vernon - Associate Director, Sustainability
Susie leads the Care Without Carbon team delivering sustainability programmes in Sussex, Surrey and beyond. Since joining SCFT in 2013, Susie has built up expertise across the spectrum of our sustainability work and now drives our transformational programmes at a strategic level.
Susie trained as a biologist at Cambridge University before moving into sustainability through a Masters in Leadership for Sustainable Development. She has practiced this in a range of different sectors and before joining the NHS worked for sustainability consultancy and development company, Beyond Green.

Oliver Slaughter - Head of Environmental Services
Oli joined the Care Without Carbon team in January 2017 as Sustainability Officer and has progressed since then to become our Head of Environmental Services. He's key to delivering on a wide range of sustainability projects, including Carbon monitoring and reporting for services provided by SCFT, with a focus on travel, waste and procurement.
Previously Oli studied BSc (Hons) Environmental Science at Plymouth University; who have been award winning for their pioneering approach to sustainability with higher education.

Rob Baker - Technical Services Manager
Rob joined the CWC team as Technical Services Manager in July 2017. He is responsible for leading on carbon reduction projects across SCFT and for other trusts in our region, including energy efficiency improvements and the installation of clean and renewable energy technologies.
Rob has an MEng in Mechanical Engineering and an MSc in Energy, Environmental Technologies and Economics. He's built-up experience in delivery of energy improvement projects over a number of years including as a Building Management System (BMS) specialist and as the Energy Management Engineer at the University of Brighton. In 2022, Rob qualified as a Passive House Designer, increasing his knowledge of practical, highly energy efficient solutions for new and existing buildings.

Toby Donhou - Energy and Carbon Manager
Toby joined the team in June 2015 as an Energy Officer, focusing on energy and carbon management services. Now Energy and Carbon Manager, he runs the shared Energy Services Bureau, supporting SCFT and other trusts locally with operational energy and water management. He also has a focus on energy, carbon and sustainability reporting and data management including leading on carbon foot-printing for the team.

Jim Thomas - Head of Logistics
Jim is a licensed Transport Manager and qualified Project Manager with many years' experience providing fleet and transport solutions to NHS Trusts, local authorities and private organisations on the South Coast. He has worked for Sussex Community NHS Trust since its formation in 2010 and manages the Trust's Logistics operation, including transport services, fleet services and the Trust's Business Travel Plan.

Hayley Carmichael - Communications Manager
Hayley joined the Care Without Carbon team in April 2015 to lead on communications activity for the then engagement programme Dare to Care. She now leads on all communications and engagement for Care Without Carbon, including the new engagement programme Together to Zero.
She has a strong background in corporate communications both in public and private sector organisations and has worked internationally with a particular focus on change communications.

Amy Bourne - Sustainability Strategy and Programme Manager
Amy joined the Care Without Carbon team in February 2022 and is responsible for sustainability programme management and the reporting and delivery of associated projects.
She has over 13 years' experience in the NHS in a number of quality improvement and programme management roles and has certification with the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA).
Jack Taylor - Sustainability Strategy and Programme Manager
Jack joined the Care Without Carbon team in January 2023 and is responsible for sustainability programme management and the reporting and delivery of associated projects.
Jack studied Biology at the University of Sheffield, focussing on whole organism and ecosystem biology. He has over 9 years' experience working in Quality Assurance and Project Management roles.
Matt Roylance - Energy Officer
Matt works within the Energy Services Bureau, overseeing energy and water management, and supporting the delivery of carbon, energy and sustainability savings across a number of NHS Trusts.
A qualified energy assessor, Matt brings numerous years' experience of building surveying, managing and promoting energy and water efficiency for domestic and commercial buildings, and renewable energy system design to our team, having worked in both the public and private sector.
Lauren Davis - Clinical Sustainability Manager
Lauren joined the team in April 2022 as part of a project and has developed the role from there to support our work in embedding sustainability into clinical practice and transformation. She works part-time in this role alongside her clinical duties as a junior doctor at University Hospitals Sussex. She studied medicine at Oxford University and has subsequently completed postgraduate qualifications at Brighton and Sussex Medical School in Healthcare Leadership.

Jenny Drake - Sustainability Manager
Jenny has been working with the waste team since joining the NHS in 2017. She moved into the Care Without Carbon team as Waste Coordinator in 2021 after completing a Masters in Environmental Assessment and Management at the University of Brighton, with a dissertation looking at the reduction of glove use in healthcare environments. Her role is to ensure the smooth running of waste management processes across the Trust as well as supporting waste and circular economy policies.
Maxine Cartwright - Waste Officer
Maxine joined the team in 2023, supporting the Care Without Carbon team in looking after their work on waste. She previously worked within the Covid vaccine and staff Flu Campaign at SCFT, providing a great knowledge of how clinical teams work across many different sites and within the community. Maxine assists with the management and development of SCFT waste management policy, strategy and infrastructure whilst ensuring compliance with statutory standards. She is responsible for assisting in the management of all waste streams generated by SCFT, providing support and guidance to both clinical and non-clinical departments.
Integrated Care Board
Our Integrated Care Board leads for sustainable healthcare work closely with the CWC team to ensure we are working together towards our Net Zero Target in the region.
Dominic Ellett – Programme Director Together to Zero
Dom joined the NHS in 1991 and became Programme Director for Together to Zero in 2021. He provides overall strategic leadership and direction setting for sustainability for NHS Sussex, and is responsible for assurance and oversight, co-ordinating and fostering teamwork across NHS partners in Sussex, and collaborative working with other public services.
He has a wide range of experience, including roles for the Integrated Care Board, as a Deputy Chief Operating Officer for CCGs, as a Commissioning Director for Mental Health Services and he has worked for Ambulance Services in both England and Wales.
Rhys Griffiths - Senior Manager (System Reform), NHS Sussex
Rhys started his professional life in Science, Technical and Medical publishing. This included roles as commissioning editor for toxicology and public health books and managing a range of earth science journals.
He joined the NHS in 2018, initially in urgent care commissioning, before then joining the strategy team. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he played a key role in establishing and operating a PPE distribution hub, and has been working for the NHS Sussex Sustainability team since January 2022.
Helen Codd - Senior Manager (System Reform), NHS Sussex
Helen joined the NHS in 2007 and has worked across the Sussex system, in community services, acute services, health education and commissioning, she currently works with NHS Sussex Integrated Care Board and is a qualified coach.
The majority of her roles have had a focus on HR, organisational development and major business change, she became PRINCE2 qualified in 2012 project manager and specialises in project and programme management of organisational and cultural change.
Since April 2022 she has worked on ‘Together to Zero – Our plan for a greener NHS in Sussex'.
Helen is a passionate advocate for sustainability and to deepen understanding and support the culture change needs of the system has recently undertaken

Harriet Rayfield - Digital Communications Manager, NHS Sussex
Harriet's background is in publishing and after graduating from Oxford Brookes University, her professional career began in the marketing department for Bloomsbury Professional's Law team, where she led on marketing and events for titles in Family, Sports and Environmental Law.
Harriet joined NHS Sussex in 2017 and has since worked within the communications team, specialising in social media, website and video content. Since 2021, she has supported the NHS Sussex sustainability team to promote their work across the Integrated Care Board and the wider health and care system in Sussex, working closely with Hayley in the Care Without Carbon team.
